Ancient Greek Myths: Illustrated Stories

A screen-free art journey through mythology, painting, collage and storytelling

What if children could step into the world of Ancient Greek myth not only by hearing the stories, but by painting and building them with their own hands?

Ancient Greek Myths: Illustrated Stories is an immersive art project that brings the power of mythology to life through painting, collage and visual storytelling. Children explore timeless tales such as The Adventures of Odysseus or Persephone: A Journey from Winter to Spring, using colour, texture, composition and layered imagery to create richly expressive illustrated scenes.

Working entirely away from screens, children engage with stories that have shaped culture for centuries, while developing artistic skill, confidence and thoughtful interpretation. Through paint, collage and guided discussion, they begin to see that myths are more than old tales; they are stories about fear, hope, courage, change, nature, loss and transformation.

Timeless stories, newly imagined

Ancient Greek myths continue to fascinate because they speak to experiences children still understand in some form today: bravery, loss, curiosity, danger, jealousy, hope, return and renewal.

This project allows children to enter those stories creatively rather than passively. Instead of only hearing about Odysseus or Persephone, they are invited to imagine the world around them; the sea, the seasons, the underworld, the landscape, the animals, the symbols and then build that world visually through their own artwork.

That makes the myths feel alive. Children begin to see them not as distant historical material, but as stories full of emotion, atmosphere and human meaning.

Painting, Storytelling & Collage

This project invites children into the visual and emotional world of Ancient Greek myth through a process that is both thoughtful and creatively exciting.

Using carefully chosen visual references and story prompts, children respond to mythological narratives through painting and collage, creating layered illustrations that feel atmospheric, expressive and full of meaning. They may depict a dramatic scene at sea, a transformation in nature, a moment of tension or the movement from darkness to light.

Because myths are full of symbolism, emotion and vivid imagery, they offer children a particularly rich foundation for visual art. The project helps them understand that painting can tell a story, collage can build atmosphere and colour can carry feeling as much as description.

WHAT CHILDREN WILL EXPLORE & LEARN

Led by a qualified Primary School teacher and experienced SENCO, sessions are calm, inclusive and intellectually engaging.

Children are encouraged to ask questions, make connections and take creative risks within a supportive small-group environment. There is generous scope for a wide range of abilities, making the project equally suitable for confident young artists and for children who are still discovering their creative voice.

This thoughtful approach helps ensure that every child feels able to participate meaningfully, develop confidence and create something they are proud of.
