Creating Noire Characters for Your World
A screen-free character design and ink drawing programme for teenagers serious about storytelling and craft
What makes a character feel believable, expressive and alive before they ever speak a line?
Creating Noir Characters for Your World is a focused drawing programme for teenagers who want to develop strong foundations in character design, black-and-white ink work and visual storytelling. Working entirely away from screens, participants create original characters designed to inhabit worlds of their own imagining, while learning that powerful storytelling begins with structure, not surface.
Using black and white ink, students explore the essential building blocks of character creation: anatomy, gesture, proportion, silhouette, line and form. The emphasis is on understanding how a figure is constructed before moving into style and refinement. Over time, they develop the technical discipline and visual confidence needed to create characters that feel dynamic, intentional and story-ready.
This is a studio-style programme for young people who enjoy drawing and want to build real depth in their craft through sustained practice, feedback and artistic mentorship.
Working in black and white ink, participants develop original characters designed to inhabit their own imagined worlds. The emphasis is on structure before style, understanding anatomy, gesture, proportion and form, before refining expressive ink techniques.

Structure before style
One of the defining strengths of this programme is its philosophy: style is strongest when it rests on solid foundations.
Rather than rushing into decorative detail, participants are encouraged to slow down and develop the core skills that make character work believable and expressive. They practise proportion, anatomy, gesture and form, learning how bodies are built, how poses carry energy and how line can communicate clarity and intent.
Only once these foundations begin to strengthen does the work move towards more refined inking and personal expression. This approach helps teenagers grow as artists in a way that is lasting, not superficial.
For families, this makes the programme especially reassuring: it is not simply about “drawing cool characters,” but about genuinely learning how to draw well.
Character Design & Sequential Art
This programme is designed for teenagers who want more than a casual art activity.
It offers a serious but supportive introduction to the foundations of character design as storytelling. Participants learn that before a character can belong in a comic, graphic novel, animation, game or illustrated world, it needs to be structurally convincing. That means understanding not only appearance, but posture, movement, proportion, mood and visual presence.
Across the sessions, teenagers build original characters from the ground up. They learn how to construct the figure, refine gesture, strengthen line work and think carefully about how a character communicates identity and narrative through design.
This makes the programme especially valuable for young artists who are already passionate about drawing and want to move from talent or enthusiasm into greater technical control and artistic maturity.
