sTILL lIFE Acrylic Painting

A screen-free painting journey in observation, colour and creative confidence

What happens when a child is given the time, tools and support to create a painting they can truly call their own?

Still Life Acrylic Painting is a thoughtful four-session project where children learn to observe carefully, mix colour with intention and build a painting from first idea to finished artwork. Through a calm, structured and encouraging process, they are guided step by step as they create a piece that feels personal, skilful and proudly their own.

Working with acrylic paint in a screen-free setting, children explore how to plan a composition, transfer an image or object onto canvas, build up layers, and add detail with increasing confidence. Along the way, they strengthen visual understanding, creative decision-making and patience, while experiencing the satisfaction of watching a painting gradually come to life.

In this four-session project, children will develop real acrylic painting skills while creating a piece that feels truly theirs. Through guided decision-making, playful problem-solving and structured technique, they’ll learn how to plan a painting, build it up in layers and finish it with detail and confidence, all in a calm, screen-free setting.

STEP INTO PAINT. THINK FREEly. CREATE PROUDly

This project invites children into the rich and rewarding world of painting through a process that is both carefully guided and creatively open.

Across four sessions, each child creates a complete acrylic painting from start to finish. They begin by choosing an object or reference image that inspires them, helping the project feel personal from the outset. From there, they learn how to plan the composition, transfer their image onto canvas and slowly develop the work through underpainting, tonal charts, layering and colour mixing.

As the painting grows, so does their confidence. Each new stage gives children the chance to make decisions, solve visual problems and take ownership of their work, all while building practical fine art skills in a calm and encouraging environment.

support your child’s development through painting

Painting offers children far more than technical skill.

It teaches patience through layering, resilience through revision and confidence through decision-making. It encourages children to slow down, look closely and trust themselves as they shape something over time. In a world of instant results and constant digital stimulation, this kind of process can be especially valuable.

Over four sessions, children not only develop stronger painting skills, but also experience what it feels like to persevere, adapt and complete something meaningful with their own hands. That sense of achievement can be deeply affirming.

From Blank Canvas to Big Confidence

For many children, one of the most powerful parts of painting is watching something emerge gradually.

A blank canvas can feel exciting, but also uncertain. This project helps children move through that uncertainty with support and structure, showing them that strong creative outcomes are built step by step. They learn that a painting does not need to be perfect from the start. It grows through looking, adjusting, layering and refining.

This is what makes the experience so confidence-building. Children begin to understand that mistakes are not failures, but part of the process. They learn to trust their eye, respond thoughtfully and feel proud of what they are capable of creating.

  • Children will learn core acrylic painting skills including under-painting, tonal values, colour mixing and composition.

They will also develop observational drawing skills and practise building an artwork gradually over time.

The project supports confidence and independence by encouraging children to make their own creative decisions and solve visual problems as they paint.

  • All materials are safe and age-appropriate. Guidance is provided throughout the sessions, including how to care for brushes and manage materials responsibly.

The structure of the project can be adapted to suit different ability levels and ages.

  • Each child will complete a finished acrylic painting on canvas. Once dry, the painting will be varnished for protection and presentation.

If time allows, children will also create a small abstract painting using leftover paint, a fun way to experiment freely with shape, line and colour.
